Pedestrian Accidents in California
Pedestrian accidents in the United States are the cause of more than 130,000 injuries annually. Unfortunately, there are four common reasons why these serious accidents continue to occur. Some of the leading factors in pedestrian accidents include:
Intersection Accidents: Although signaled crosswalks greatly reduce the number of pedestrian accidents that take place every year, when drivers fail to adhere to date traffic control devices and can result in serious injuries for pedestrians traveling across the roadway nearby. When drivers fail to yield to pedestrians at intersections, turn without looking, and engage in other negligent actions, they can cause severe injury accidents.
Quiet Vehicles: As more drivers are turning to battery-operated and hybrid vehicles, they are finding that the decreased sound these vehicles make has resulted in an increase in the number of pedestrian accidents. In fact, studies find that drivers in these types of vehicles are 40% more likely to collide with pedestrians due to the fact that they simply do not hear the vehicles coming through.
Dark Clothing: When pedestrians are wearing dark clothing, especially during the evening hours, they are at an increased risk of being harmed in pedestrian accidents.
Unfortunately, pedestrians represent as much as 13% of all traffic-related fatalities each year. Thousands more are left with significant injuries that require medical care. If you have been harmed in a pedestrian accident, a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer can help you get justice.
