Fatal Car Accidents in California
More than 4000 people died as a result of traffic collisions reported in California in 2021. This record-high number is concerning. Unfortunately, every year, the number of fatal crashes reported in our state continues to increase despite the number of laws, rules, and regulations in place to protect motorists.
Many fatal accidents that we see in California are caused by distracted or impaired drivers. If you or a loved one has been involved in a fatal car accident, it is important to know what damages may be recoverable by filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver who is responsible.
California law allows for the recovery of economic and non-economic damages following a car accident. Economic damages include things like medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages, and property damage. Non-economic damages are more difficult to put a dollar value on. However, they can include emotional distress, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.
If you have lost a loved one in a car accident, you may also be able to recover punitive damages, depending on the circumstances of the crash. An experienced wrongful death lawyer in Los Angeles will be able to help you better understand your rights after losing a loved one.
