Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in California
Reports provided by the California’s office of traffic safety indicate that nearly 25.6 percent of all fatal traffic accidents that take place in California involve pedestrians. Although there are numerous laws in place in the state of California to protect pedestrians, they continue to suffer as a result of drivers who are negligent. Some of the leading causes of fatal pedestrian accidents in our state include:
Distractions: Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of pedestrian fatalities. Even just a few seconds of distraction can be enough to cause an accident.
Impairment: Impaired driving is another major factor in pedestrian fatalities. Drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol are much more likely to cause a fatal pedestrian crash.
Failing to yield: Failing to yield is another common cause of pedestrian fatalities. Drivers who fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians – whether at crosswalks or other locations – are placing them in danger.
Speeding: Drivers who exceed the posted speed limit or drive too fast for conditions are more likely to be unable to stop in time to avoid striking a pedestrian.
