Fatal Car Accidents in California
In 2021, over 3800 people died as a result of traffic crashes in our state. There are many instances where people lose their lives as a result of the negligent actions of others. Wrong-way crashes, in particular, generally involve some form of negligence. Some common causes of these fatal car crashes include:
- Speeding: Driving too fast for the conditions of the road is one of the most common reasons for all types of accidents, including wrong-way crashes. When drivers enter a highway or ramp going too fast, they may not have enough time to react to oncoming traffic before it's too late.
- Driving under the influence: Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and reaction time, making it more likely for drivers to make poor decisions, such as driving the wrong way on a one-way street or highway. Even over-the-counter drugs can impair a person’s ability to operate the vehicle responsibly.
- Distracted driving: Distractions like cell phones, radios, and even other passengers can take the focus of a driver off the road, making it more likely that they will miss important information on the road that indicates where they need to go, such as road signs indicating a one-way section of highway.
- Poor signage: If road signs indicating a one-way section of highway are obstructed by other objects or difficult to see, drivers may enter the wrong way onto a highway. Poor lighting can also make it more difficult for drivers to see signs and other information that would prevent them from going the wrong way.
