Are pedestrian accidents occurring more frequently?

| Jan 1, 2020 | Uncategorized |

Any traffic accident can be alarming, and many cause the loss of life or major injuries. However, accidents involving pedestrians can be particularly concerning because those who are walking are so vulnerable when a much larger vehicle hits them, especially if the vehicle is traveling fast. Some people may think that with increased awareness, fewer pedestrians are involved in accidents in comparison to previous years. However, statistics show that this is not true, and all drivers, as well as pedestrians, should be mindful of the risk of an accident on the road.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that pedestrian accidents in the U.S. have been occurring more frequently since 2009. In fact, during 2017 more than 5,900 pedestrians passed away after being hit by a vehicle, according to the NHTSA. The NHTSA draws attention to many risk factors that increase the chances of an accident, such as speeding, crossing the road in the wrong spot and failing to follow traffic laws.

With pedestrian accidents becoming more common, it is more important than ever for drivers to watch out for pedestrians while they are behind the wheel. Regrettably, there are some drivers who simply do not care, and many drivers make poor decisions (such as driving while drunk) that threaten the lives of pedestrians. It is paramount for those who were injured in a pedestrian accident because of a driver that failed to follow traffic laws to take a careful look at some of the options that may be on the table, such as the feasibility of filing a lawsuit.
